Video of a dog venturing to the top of one of Egypt’s Great Pyramids has gone mega-viral.
The dog ventured up to the 448-foot tall Pyramid of Khafre is one of the three Ancient Egyptian Pyramids of Giza. Climbing the pyramid is not allowed but that didn’t stop the daring dog.
Paraglider and content creator Marshall Mosher first spotted the lone dog barking at birds at the top of Khafre as he and fellow paragliders cruised over the pyramids last week.
“Yesterday when we were flying, we saw something we did not expect,” Marshall said in a Wednesday video. “There’s a dog stuck at the top of the Pyramid of Khafre … I honestly don’t even know how it got up there because the blocks on the pyramid are 6, 7, 8 feet tall and I don’t know if it can get down.”
Paraglider returns to look for dog
Mosher then tells viewers he’s going to go back to look for the dog for a possible rescue.
“It is illegal to climb the pyramids, but at least we can fly over the top and see if it’s still there,” Mosher said. “So, let’s go find this dog.”
The dog was gone by the time Mosher hit the skies early that morning, saying in the video that he thought it got down. Another video later surfaced, which showed a similar-looking canine making its way safely down the steps.
Whether the dog filmed at the top and at the bottom of the pyramid were the same isn’t clear, since hundreds of stray dogs roam the Pyramids’ complex, especially close to the base, Mosher said in an interview with CNN Travel.
Mosher was “actively looking for animal shelters in Cairo to help these strays find safer, less adventurous homes,” according to reporting by CNN Travel.
Dog’s epic hike causes online commotion
Mosher’s first post about the dog received millions of views overnight and has been shared on many platforms, garnering millions and millions of more views.
Mosher told CNN Travel he was surprised by all of the interest in the dog’s trek.
“I thought the opportunity to fly over the pyramids was decently interesting news, but no one cares about that,” Mosher, who regular paraglides over the Great Pyramids, told CNN Travel.
Users care more about the dog, how it got up and down from the pyramid, and for some, the simplistic beauty of its journey to an ancient place.
“Getting unreasonably emotional at the thought that this dog climbed THE great pyramid of Giza, a landmark full of history and prestige, completely unaware of any of it … just to bark at birds,” one user posted. “Animals are such simple but profound creatures.”

Some, according to Mosher, thought the dog could have been “physical embodiment of Anubis, the ancient Egyptian god of the dead who’s often depicted with the head of a jackal.”
“I can see why the dog wanted to go up there. It’s definitely the best view for Cairo street dog that I can think exists,” Mosher said to CNN Travel.
