JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) — A man, two dogs, and six puppies are safe after a fire broke out at a home on Brownswood Road on Friday afternoon.
The St. Johns Fire District responded to the scene shortly after 12:30 p.m. Homeowner Maurice Jones said he was home on his lunch break when he noticed a strange smell after switching over the laundry. Upon investigating, he discovered flames shooting up to the ceiling in the laundry room.

Jones expressed gratitude for the firefighters’ swift response, which ensured the safety of his dogs, who were in a room adjacent to the laundry room.
“It was not safe to go inside the home, but you can see the melted laundry detergent bottle and charred clothes that the firefighters tossed out onto the front porch,” Jones said.
All six German Shepherd-Husky puppies are doing well.
“And the fire department did their due diligence and they saved the pups. They went in there and grabbed all six of them because it was pitch – completely black in there,” Jones said.
