Horry Co. police investigate animal ill-treatment, seize multiple pets

On Wednesday, officers with the Horry County Police Department arrived in the Nichols section of Horry County to follow up on a report of ill-treatment of animals.

Upon arrival, officers observed two dogs loose on the property, which is completely fenced in, according to the report.

The report states that one of the dogs seemed to have some kind of eye infection based on a white puss around both eyes.

When the officers met Kaylee Lynn Gasque on the property, she gave consent for the officers to open the gate and enter the property.

Gasque was asked about the number of animals she had on the property and said there were two dogs running loose, two dogs inside the residence, and one kenneled in the backyard.

According to the report, Gasque also said there was another dog that had died on the property the day before and she was going to bury it that day.

She said she had been treating the deceased dog with different medications and nothing had worked, according to the report.

The report reads that the deceased dog appeared emaciated with no food or water in the area that the dog had access to. The dog was also tethered to a chain, and Gasque said she put the dog on a chain because he kept climbing the fence.

Due to the condition of the deceased animal, officials believed the dog had died before Gasque had initially stated. Gasque said the dog was alive as of Monday, October 14, according to the report.

When the officers entered the residence, they observed two loose dogs and two rabbits in a cage, according to the report.

The report states that the animals appeared healthy and active, but the larger of the two dogs appeared to be underweight and flea-ridden.Officers also observed the sick dog that appeared to be emaciated.

According to the report, there were animal feces and urine stains throughout the residence.

Officials had consent from Gasque to take the deceased dog to the HCACC for examination and a cause of death.

After the search warrant, officials conducted an animal seizure order that would be obtained to take all the animals on the property into custody.

According to the report, six live dogs, two deceased dogs, two live rabbits, and one deceased rabbit were seized.

Gasque was charged with seven counts of care and treatment of an animal and ill-treatment of animals, in general, torture.
