SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — An airline that offers flights to dogs and their humans is now offering service in the Bay Area. BARK Air, which offers a “white paw” dog-first flight experience is now flying out of San Francisco.
Although if you want to take a trip with your good boy or good girl, don’t expect to catch a commercial flight out of SFO. BARK Air offers service through a charter company and flies on Gulfstream G5s, which are twin-engine business jets.
Flights aren’t sold to full capacity in order to provide dogs and their humans enough space to spread out from one another. Unlike traditional flights for dogs, there are no crates on Bark Air.
Travelers and their pets are greeted at the airport one hour before flight time by special BARK Air concierges who welcome canine passengers and help them settle into the flight experience through socialization and “dog-centric cabin preparation,” according to the airline’s website. Cabins onboard BARK Air flights are prepped with things to help keep pups calm in-flight, including pheromone, music, scented refreshment towels, and other comforts.
Concierges are also equipped with “just in case” bags that contain calming treats, leashes and poop bags. In-flight service includes a choice of water or bone broth along with BARK Air-branded treats and snacks.
In addition to San Francisco, BARK Air also currently serves Los Angeles, New York, London, Paris, Chicago, Phoenix and Miami. Destinations offered from SF are currently limited to New York and Chicago.
Although, taking a trip to the Big Apple with you best friend doesn’t come cheap. A one-way ticket to NYC for a dog and its human costs $6,500. Flying to Chicago is slightly cheaper at $6,000. BARK Air says it’s working to bring the cost down as it scales.
