COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) — The City of Columbia Animal Shelter is limiting intakes following an outbreak of Pneumovirus among its dogs.
Due to this outbreak, the shelter will only admit sick and injured animals, as well as those involved in animal cruelty investigations, for the next 14 days.
Pneumovirus causes respiratory illnesses in dogs, with symptoms including coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, and difficulty breathing. There are currently no vaccinations available to protect or treat dogs for this virus, making immediate quarantine and treatment essential for infected animals.
During this time, the shelter cannot accept pets from owners who wish to surrender them. However, it is offering resources to assist those looking to rehome their pets, including basic veterinary care, food, and support for finding new homes.
If someone finds stray animals, they are encouraged to temporarily house them and try to locate the owners. If the owner cannot be found, they may consider rehoming the animal themselves. The shelter can provide guidance on effective rehoming strategies.
Residents of the City of Columbia and Richland County can request a spay/neuter voucher from the shelter, which will reduce the cost of spaying or neutering at select locations.
For more information on available resources, please visit Columbia Animal Services online at www.animalservices.columbiasc.gov or call the shelter at (803) 776-PETS (7387).
