MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A Whitehaven man shot and killed his neighbor’s dog early Monday morning in what police called an act of self-defense.
Memphis Police (MPD) said officers responded just after 6 a.m. to an “animal shooting” at an apartment complex on Fair Fall Drive near Winchester Road and found a dog had been shot.
“Officers observed one shell casing in a neighborhood parking spot, with a blood pool in front of the steps of the complainant residence,” police said in a report.
MPD said that the dog died in their owner’s arms minutes after officers arrived.
The owner told investigators that she let out her dogs shortly after she came home from work just before 3:50 a.m. Both dogs were unleased when they ran toward the neighbor, who told MPD that he fired “a warning shot” to try to scare the animals away.
“The suspect stated he feared for his safety as both dogs ran toward him,” police said in a report. “This fear prompted the use of force.”
Police said the shooting was in self-defense after talking to both the dog owner and the neighbor.
