BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — The Broome County Dog Shelter held its fall open house on Friday.
The open house gives community members a chance to meet the dogs without having to make an appointment time. The shelter also takes the opportunity to accept donations and teach the public about volunteer positions.
40 dogs were available for adoption during the event and according to the shelter, four dogs were brought to new homes.
One of the shelter’s longest residents was adopted during the event and staff said they were thrilled.
The shelter is responsible for nine towns and the City of Binghamton, contributing to their overcrowding.
Daily, the shelter averages 50 to 60 dogs, most of which are strays.
The cost to adopt a dog is $225, which includes spaying or neutering, microchipping, and vaccinations. This effort helps address the area’s stray dog problem.
Manager of the Broome Co. Dog Shelter Tiffany Wheelock emphasized that while the shelter does not typically house purebred dogs, all residents deserve to find their forever homes.
“I know Pitbulls get a negative reputation, but that is what we mostly have here,” Wheelock stated. “But they are my favorite, so I’d also say to try and give a Pitbull a chance.”
The shelter is always accepting donations of Purina One dog food, cleaning supplies, toys and treats.
