Moment service dog stomps to alert owner of medical episode: “Time to work”

The moment a service dog stepped in to help his handler was caught on camera, leaving viewers speechless over his prompt response.

TikTok user @thatkidwiththedog was getting in the spooky season spirit by wearing matching Halloween sweaters with their service dog, Tobias. They were decorating a Halloween tree, a tradition in their family, when Tobias noticed something was off.

In the October 5 video, you can see the Doberman pinscher‘s wheels turning inside his head as his owner continued fluffing up the tree. It dawned on him that an episode was coming, and he jumped in to stop it. Barking, he alerted his owner and looked up at them with an expression that meant it was time to stop everything and lie down.

“The first alert you see in the clip happened about six minutes into me putting the tree up,” the owner told Newsweek. “When he alerted, I immediately went off camera to go lay down, and thankfully, we were able to prevent a syncope episode.”

Syncope, or fainting, is a sudden, temporary loss of consciousness where a person could fall from standing or sitting. Tobias alerted them to avoid this from happening. After about 45 minutes to an hour, they felt better and went to work on the tree again.

They started filming again when they began decorating the tree again, but then Tobias alerted them a second time. This time, it was because their blood pressure was dropping. When he couldn’t get through with a quick bark, he stomped his paws.

“This time it was much, much more intense, to the point I could actually feel the syncope taking over,” they said. “Nausea, darkening vision, lightheadedness, shaking. That’s when I immediately got down on the floor before I fell down.”

Tobias knew it was “time to work” and immediately stepped in, forcing them to get to the ground and put their head back. He assumed the position and rested right on them during the entire episode.

With over 2.3 million views on TikTok, people couldn’t stop admiring the dog’s effective response and helping them through the episode.

“These service dogs, who can sense these types of things are so INCREDIBLE to me!! Totally LOVE it,” said one viewer.

Another added: “Love seeing a Doberman as a service dog!!! What a good boy protecting you and alerting!! Dogs are truly so amazing.”

A third person commented: “We don’t deserve dogs. they are heaven sent.”
