Dogs returned to shelter after just 2 months search for forever home again

Two young dogs named Spoon and Fork are searching for a new home just months after being adopted. The pups were recently returned to the Yolo County Animal Services Shelter in Woodland, California, after being adopted together in early August.

The puppies had been found as strays in Zamora, California, with no identification and no owners coming forward to claim them. Before long, the shelter found them a new home, but after just two months they were returned due to allergies in the family.

Spoon and Fork are not alone in their return to the shelter. Their mom, London, an energetic adult dog, was also previously adopted but brought back shortly afterward because she was too lively for her new family’s small children. The three dogs are now back in the shelter and hoping for a happy ending.

“All things considered, the puppies and mama are doing well despite being in the shelter again,” the Yolo County Animal Services Shelter told Newsweek via email. “The puppies get to be housed together so they’re never lonely. Of course, it’s confusing and stressful for any dog to be brought back to the shelter environment after spending time in a home, but our staff and volunteers are really devoted to providing as much love and care to all of the animals as possible.”

In 2023, 6.5 million animals entered U.S. shelters, according to Shelter Animals Count, up 4 percent when compared to 2022 intakes. At the end of last year, 117,000 additional dogs and cats were in the animal sheltering system compared to the same time the year before.

Around 850,000 animals were euthanized in shelters in 2023, a rise of 15 percent when compared to 2022. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.

Since returning to the shelter, none of the dogs have had any interest from potential adopters. Another challenge that Spoon, Fork and London face comes down to something they can’t control—their coat color. Black dogs tend to be overlooked by potential adopters, and the shelter believes this may be part of the reason they haven’t found homes yet.

“While we can’t state this being the reason for sure, black dog syndrome seems to be an issue across many shelters where the black dogs are often overlooked,” the shelter said. “It also doesn’t help if the dog has a ‘return’ on their record since some folks come in only interested in a ‘ready-made’ dog that has no known ‘issues.'”

But the shelter remains hopeful that the dogs will find the loving homes they deserve.

“An ideal home for Spoon and Fork will be one that is ready for some fun puppy times as well as willing to create some structure so that they mature into well-mannered adults. They’d make great family pets,” the shelter said.

For London, she would thrive with an adopter who understands her playful energy. “London is such a gem. She’s smart, friendly, and playful. While she may have been too much for her previous adopter’s small kids, she has potential to be fine with dog-savvy older kids who don’t mind the occasional zoomie and game of fetch,” the shelter said.
