Dog high after dental work has internet in stitches: “is this real life?”

Internet viewers can’t stop laughing after a dog owner from North Carolina recorded her pup coming home from the veterinarian looking “Uh-oh so high.”

The hilarious clip, shared on TikTok on Thursday by @caninecasa, shows the rescue pup, Maisey, sitting in the front seat of her owner’s car, looking confused and disoriented, with her eyes wide-open and her tongue out, as the drugs the vet gave her take their time to wear off.

“I just picked my dog up from the vet, she had dental work and she is so high now! Right Maisey? Are you OK? We’re almost home, baby; we’re almost there, good girl!” the poster can be heard saying, as she struggles to contain her laughter.

While anesthetic may be needed for dogs about to undergo surgeries or having dental work done, it doesn’t come without health risks. The American Kennel Club says that, even though anesthesia-related deaths are rare, they do occur; in fact, about 1 in 2,000 healthy dogs die under anesthesia every year.

The breed, age, and size of your dog may put them more at risk than others. Breeds such as the cavalier King Charles spaniel may be more at risk of cardiac disease, while bulldogs, and pugs, may suffer airway-related complications.

To reduce the risks related to anesthesia, it is important that you let your veterinarian know if your dog has ever had a reaction to drugs or sedation, and make them aware of any the medications and supplements they may be taking.

Senior canines and puppies are also more at risk of side effects, and so are overweight dogs. Moreover, toy breeds can face the risk of hypothermia and overdose. The latter is also an issue faced by larger breeds because they will required a higher dosage for it to be effective.

Dogs with preexisting conditions are also more exposed. For example, diabetic dogs and those who suffer from epilepsy will need to have a thorough examination before the veterinarian can consider giving them any sort of sedation.
