BLUEFIELD, W. Va. (WVVA) -Community Connections Inc. is a Mercer County nonprofit that fights substance abuse in our area. However, they do more than that, such as their community day camps, which held its first day on Wednesday at Greater Mt. Zion Pentecostal Church.
This was the first of three different free summer camps they hold in various locations across Mercer County, with the next two being held in Matoaka and Oakvale respectively. The purpose of these camps is to give kids something fun and educational to do during the summer, such as crafts, games, and prevention education lessons.
On Wednesday, they had some special guests: local law enforcement, along with their canine officers, who showed off how effective dogs can be in police work. An organizer says this is a great way to introduce kids to those who keep us safe, while keeping things fun.
“…The kids really need to see our officers and other first responders in a positive light, so bringing them in, getting to engage with the kids, have fun and play is just a positive for our community,” says Eden Scruggs, programs director for Camp Mariposa, a camp through Community Connections Inc.
Even if you missed the camp today, Scruggs says you can still join them Thursday or Friday at the Mount Zion Pentecostal Church in Bluefield, West Virginia. They will also have a camp at the Matoaka Volunteer Fire Department July 10th – 12th and at the Oakvale Ruritan Club August 7th – 9th. She says they could use volunteers as well.
