A Nevada City man has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after a crash where 11 dogs escaped his rental truck, according to the California Highway Patrol.CHP said Brady James Fehr was driving a Penske rental box truck Friday southbound on Latrobe Road near South Shingle Road in El Dorado County when the vehicle veered off the road. Fehr had been taking about 11 husky mix dogs from his rescue in Nevada County to another rescue in Mokelumne Hill, according to CHP. The truck collided with a barbed wire fence, which opened a hole in the cargo box and the dogs began to exit the vehicle. Witnesses said Fehr didn’t stop despite some of the vehicle’s tires being blown out. The witnesses saw several dogs along the roadway. After continuing through a stop sign, the truck merged onto Highway 16 into the path of a witness, CHP said. That witness then saw a dog get ejected from the cargo box of the truck. The witness then flagged down Fehr and CHP. CHP said Fehr was believed to have been driving under the influence of alcohol and a controlled substance. He was held on $5,000 bail. CHP said they did not believe any of the dogs were hit by other vehicles. Three of the dogs remain loose. The others were taken by El Dorado Animal Control and Amador Animal Control.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter
