Three people are accused of starving dogs to death in their Eastpointe home.
A mother, her son and the son’s girlfriend have been charged in the case, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office announced in a news release Tuesday.
Authorities said Corneshia Robinson, 49; her son, Kentrell Dorr, 21; and Dorr’s girlfriend, India Jones, 21, were evicted from their Eastpointe rental home Monday.
When the property manager and cleaning crew entered the house, the Prosecutor’s Office said they found six dogs in a state of decomposition in the basement.
All three suspects are charged with killing/torturing animals in the third degree, a four-year felony, and abandoning/cruelty to animals, a two-year felony, the Prosecutor’s Office said.
“This is a horrifying case of animal torture, where these individuals showed a complete disregard for life by allegedly starving these dogs to death. The suffering they inflicted is beyond words,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido. “While no sentence can undo the harm done, we will pursue justice to the fullest extent of the law to ensure these offenders are held accountable for their actions.”
Under Michigan law, torturing and killing dogs carries a maximum penalty of up to four years in prison.
Dorr and Jones have been arraigned in 38th District Court, where their bond was set at $25,000 with no 10%. Robinson will be arraigned at a later date, authorities said.
The defendants are scheduled to appear for a probable cause hearing at 1 p.m. Oct. 16.
