APPLETON, Wis. (WBAY) – An Appleton-based dog rescue called Hope Highway is doing its part to help get shelter dogs out of the areas ravaged by Hurricane Helene into foster homes in Northeast Wisconsin.
As they work out logistics, they are in desperate need of foster families. This rescue is 100% foster-based, so all the dogs go to homes, not shelters.
The need is great to help as many dogs as possible. Here’s what’s required to be a foster family: first, a willingness to open your home.
If you rent, they need to know your landlord approves. All expenses, like food and veterinary bills are covered by the rescue.
There is a vetting portion, where they do a criminal history check and ask for three references and a vet reference, if you have one.
“One of the things that can make that process go faster is if you let you know, like your vet know, and all your references know that, hey, you might be getting a phone call, that helps a lot, because then we have people answering their phones, and the vet won’t give us our information unless you’ve given information. So those are the things you can do to speed it up a little bit,” said Tammy Johnson, Fundraising Coordinator, Hope Highway.
