Animal shelter depending on fosters to keep dogs as storm recovery continues

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Recovery efforts in communities around metro Atlanta are underway after a powerful storm barreled across the state Friday.

Emergency crews rushed Friday to rescue people trapped in flooded homes, residents navigating extended power outages, and downed trees.

Fosters stepped up to house 90 Fulton County shelter dogs. Now, the animal service is asking anyone who can to keep the dogs a little longer, as they navigate their capacity numbers in the aftermath of Helene.

Now the shelter has its sights set on the road ahead, the long-term impacts of the storm could bring more animals their way and eventually, the dogs in foster homes have to come back to the shelter.

“When we have moments like this the community comes together, they never fail to support us,” said Audrey Shoemaker. “We went into this with two record-breaking intake months going into this so we have no idea what to expect from this storm,”

Fulton County and much of Georgia have a long road ahead, but every bit of help makes all the difference.

“I think I get emotional because we have been so crowded for so long and it is incredible to watch the community step up in such an amazing way. We need to keep the momentum going,” said Shoemaker.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
