This Cape Cod festival celebrates dachshunds, with a costume parade, new beer, games, more

A few minutes into a phone call with Cape Cod Doxie Day president Eva Carbonaro, her three dachshunds unleash a cacophonous chorus of barking.

“You can always hear a dachshund,” Carbonaro said, laughing.

Carbonaro’s dog Nathan ― who died last year at 16 years old ― inspired her to organize a meetup for dachshund owners to socialize with their dogs. The idea grew quickly.

“The first Cape Cod Doxie Day was in 2008 at Chapin Beach. We had 50 people,” Carbonaro recalled. “This is our sixteenth year. We usually have 400 guests from all over the country. I can’t believe we’ve come this far.”

When is Cape Cod Doxie Day?

The 16th Annual Cape Cod Doxie Day is from noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Barnstable County Courthouse Complex, 3195 Main St. in historic Barnstable Village.

New this year is a 4-8 p.m. Sweet 16 afterparty for dogs and people in the biergarten at Cape Cod Beer, which is releasing a new Dachshund Beer and will serve a three-dimensional dachshund cake. The brewery is located at 1336 Phinney’s Lane in Hyannis, about 1.5 miles from the courthouse.

What happens at Cape Cod Doxie Day?

The day is highlighted by all things dachshund, including Doxie Dash races. Race slots, at a donation of $25 each, went on sale on National Dachshund Day on June 21 and sold out within the week.

There is also a dachshund parade featuring rescue dog alumni from Paw-Affection Dachshund Rescue. Prizes and bragging rights are available for the longest dachshund, owner/pet look-alike, wiener wannabe and more. Play a round of dachshund trivia, and sing along with the Cape Cod Ukulele Club to the Dachs Song.

Vic, sporting a lobster costume, gives owner Meg Bannon some love during the parade at the Barnstable County Complex for the 2021 Cape Cod Doxie Day gathering of dachshunds.

How much does Cape Cod Doxie Day cost?

Doxie Day is free to all well-behaved and leashed dogs. Dogs must be vaccinated against rabies, distemper and parvovirus. Parking is free.

Donations will be accepted for the Sampson Fund for Veterinary Care, which works to ensure no dog or cat is euthanized due to lack of financial resources.

Cape Cod Doxie Day will also be collecting unopened pet food and kitty litter for Red’s Pet Pantry.

Is there food for humans at Doxie Day?

Food will be sold, as well as doxie-themed goods from local vendors.

Wild Game Sausage Man food truck, Press Ahead Coffee and Herbivore Patisserie will be at the event, and there are pet-friendly dining options within easy walking distance.

Is Cape Cod Doxie Day handicapped-accessible?

Yes. After Chapin Beach, Cape Cod Doxie Day was at the Cape Cod Fairgrounds for a few years but then shifted to its current space around the Registry of Deeds building.

Franklin, left, and Milo keep their shark outfits dry in their carriage arriving with owner Stephanie Davis at the annual Cape Cod Doxie Day in 2023, which played out in a steady rain at the Barnstable County Complex.

The space is perfect because, Carbonaro said, “There’s plenty of free parking and no steps. We get dachshunds with wheels on the back if they have had back surgery. This offers access to people and pets of all abilities.”

Do you have to be a dachshund to be in the Cape Cod Doxie Day parade?

No. The Weiner Waddle and Waggin’ Parade includes prizes for best-dressed, best waggin’ and best weiner wannabe.

“We get tons of weiner wannabees, all kinds of dogs dressed in hot dog costumes. There are Irish wolfhounds and all kinds of labs,” Carbonaro said.

The parade also has a wagon contest.

“We had a ‘Jaws’ wagon one year and the dog was dressed like a shark. There was a pirate ship with a dog dressed like a pirate. We had a whole family in leidenhausen.”

What will Cape Cod Beer’s afterparty include?

“The After Party will feature a ‘Best Pet Trick’ contest, 3-D dachshund birthday cake, dog brew bar and treats, photo booth with Sue Unleashed, Red River BBQ food truck, games, prizes and more,” according to publicity for the event.

Cape Cod Beer, Cape Doxie Doxie Day and Weenieton’s Stefanie Shank teamed up to create Doxie Dunkel, a German Oktoberfest-style dark wheat Dunkelweizen beer. Emmy-nominated Nickelodeon art director Shank designed a fun dachshund label. The brew will be available on draft and in 750ml bottles while it lasts starting at the afterparty on Sept. 28. A 750ml bottle is available for purchase on Eventbrite.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
