Kristian Campbell, one of the Boston Red Sox’s top prospects, was named the Eastern League Most Valuable Player after a stint with the Portland Sea Dogs that lasted just two and a half months.In addition, Campbell was named Baseball America’s Minor League Player of the Year in a season that saw him start out in High-A with the Greenville Drive and finish in Triple-A with the Worcester Red Sox.Campbell was promoted to Double-A Portland from High-A Greenville on June 4 and played 56 games with the Sea Dogs.The 22-year-old batted .362 with 17 doubles, three triples, eight home runs, 35 RBIs, 48 runs scored and 17 stolen bases.Campbell is just the second Sea Dogs player to ever earn Eastern League MVP. The last to do it was Kevin Millar in 1997, when Portland was still the Double-A affiliate of the Florida Marlins. Millar ended up playing three seasons with the Red Sox and helped Boston win the 2004 World Series.On Aug. 20, Campbell was promoted to Triple-A Worcester. He hit .330 with 32 doubles, three triples, 20 homers, 77 RBIs, 94 runs scored and 24 steals in 115 games across three levels of the minor leagues.Campbell has had a meteoric rise through the minor leagues after the Red Sox drafted him out of Georgia Tech in the fourth round in June 2023.Minor League Baseball also selected Campbell to its Eastern League All-Star Team as a utility player. Campbell played at least 10 games in three different positions for the Sea Dogs: second base, shortstop and center field.Three more Sea Dogs players earned Eastern League All-Star honors: outfielder Roman Anthony, shortstop Marcelo Mayer and catcher Kyle Teel, the latter of whom was named an All-Star as a designated hitter.The trio of Anthony, Mayer and Teel, known collectively as Boston’s Big Three, were all promoted to Triple-A Worcester together about a week before Campbell got his callup.
