Hank’s Haute Dogs closes for retirement, owner seeks new enterprises

HONOLULU (Island News) — After Henry ‘“Hank” Adaniya’s 17-year run, the owner will close his restaurant Hank’s Haute Dogs on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024 for retirement.

The new hours until Hank’s last day will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. The spot is located on 324 Coral St. at SALT At Our Kakaako.

Back in 2006, Hank closed his acclaimed Chicago restaurant named Trio to return to Hawaii and reconnect with his family roots. He then pursued his lifelong dream to reinvent his parents’ Kapiolani Park hot dog concession from the 1940s and ‘50s.

His tiny hole-in-the-walk quickly gained local and national recognition with features in Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Man v. Food and Somebody Feed Phil. What made Hank’s noteworthy are the classic and unique haute dog creations as well as the juicy burgers.

Hank shared his plans for retirement, “After 45 years in this biz, it’s time for one last food chapter in my life. What that is, I still don’t know yet, but it’ll come around.”

The Buho Restaurant Group will take over the prime space in October for an upcoming concept.

“I will miss Hank’s a lot, but who knows, maybe someone will emerge with interest in taking it forward. I’m considering to license the brand. I still love the concept!” he mused.

Although Hank is not a chef, he envisioned his business might stimulate the culinary scene in Honolulu. Since regional Hawaii cuisine was 20 years old, he thought that throwing a playful twist on hot dogs into the mix might inspire a new generation of chefs with new ideas.

For Hank’s post-restaurant plans, he wants to give back to the industry through consulting, His niche would be flourishing independent restaurants. He said that the post-pandemic climate of the restaurant scene added to the already challenging business. To survive in this industry is an accomplishment, let alone to succeed, he noted.

“I have had some wonderful employees who embraced my dream and a multitude of loyal customers who’ve supported us over the years. I am grateful for them all,” Hank said.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
