Franconia Notch, New Hampshire — When dogs need help on the hiking trails of New Hampshire, a group of volunteers can come to their rescue.
On September 16th, a person was hiking with his two dogs on the Franconia Ridge Loop. This nine-mile hike is strenuous, making it a tricky journey for dogs and humans alike. During the hike, the human realized that one of their dogs, Crosby, was struggling. The golden retriever was slowing down and taking more breaks than usual. One mile into the Old Bridle Path trail, the dog owner realized Crosby was exhausted and had suffered soft tissue damage to his paw pads.
Hikers in New Hampshire are familiar with NH Fish & Game’s team, which rescues injured people during these situations. However, NH Fish & Game does not have a rescue team for these kinds of instances. You should call NH Paw Rescue for dogs injured on hiking trails. New Hampshire Paw Rescue is an “informal group of volunteers available to assist with dog rescue incidents in the mountains of New Hampshire.”
The Appalachian Mountain Club called NH Paw Rescue to assist Crosby. The first responders started hiking up at 5 p.m. and reached the hiker and their dogs at 6:30 p.m. After loading him into the rigid litter, they got the golden retriever to the trailhead a little after 7:15 p.m. The volunteers covered the dog’s paw pads with bandages and booties. After getting the golden retriever into the car, Crosby’s owner planned to get him veterinary care.

Following this situation, NH Paw Rescue recommends that dog owners go to HikeSafe.com to find the appropriate gear to bring for a hike, think about their dog’s fitness level, carry dog first aid gear like a dog rescue harness, check paw pads throughout the hike, use caution in warmer weather conditions, and keep in mind that dog rescues aren’t provided by NH Fish & Game.
