BRANFORD, CT — A Branford man is facing charges after police said he abandoned two neglected dogs on a city road.
Richard Stokes was arrested Tuesday and charged with two felony counts of animal cruelty after the dogs were discovered by passers-by a day earlier.
According to police, Branford Animal Control received a call around 3 p.m. Monday from a driver, who said she found a distressed and overheated senior dog stumbling on Hosley Avenue. Police said a second dog was found by another driver on the same road around 10 p.m.

Animal control officials were able to determine Stokes owned the dogs, both of which were taken to emergency veterinary hospitals for treatment.
According to police, both dogs were treated for severe anemia due to flea infestations and for being underweight. In addition, the 7-year-old male dog had Lyme disease and the 14-year-old female dog was found to be deaf, police said.

Both dogs have since recovered and found new homes, authorities said.
