CLEVELAND – Dog lovers unite! This week marks National Dog Week.

And there are plenty of reasons to celebrate our four-legged friends, according to Chivonna Childs, PhD, psychologist for Cleveland Clinic.

“Having a dog is great for our mental health. Being around dogs is good for us,” Dr. Childs said. “There are studies that have heavily suggested people with animals live longer.”

Dr. Childs said being with your dog can ease symptoms of depression and anxiety while giving you a boost of dopamine and serotonin – the feel-good chemicals.

When you’re feeling stressed for example, simply petting a dog can help calm you down.

Dogs also encourage exercise, which is beneficial for both our mental and physical health.

Dr. Childs added that by going on walks, you’re likely to be more social, as well, since you can meet other people along the way.

If you can’t have a dog yourself, Dr. Childs said there are other options to reap the benefits.

“You can get some of the same benefits of having a dog by volunteering at an animal shelter or visiting a loved one’s pet. Spending time with a dog can lower symptoms of anxiety and depression,” Dr. Childs said.

If you’re not a dog person, that’s OK.

Dr. Childs said having any pet can give us a sense of purpose and boost our mental health.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
