Cat and dog siblings ‘kung fu’ fighting has internet in stitches

You can always count on TikTok for entertainment, and one pet video has recently been compared to a Kung Fu movie.

Racking up almost 800,000 views in three days (as of September 17), the footage shows an unlikely duo channeling their inner Jackie Chan.

The hilarious video shared to an account dedicated to Max, the cat, and Sunny, the Maltese rescue dog (@max_and_sunny) shows the pair playfully fighting in the corridor, rolling from one end to the other. Their martial arts-like moves have gained significant traction online and received over 71,000 likes.

“I’m invested, what happened next?” said one user and another asked, “Who choreographed this?”

“Best Kung Fu movie I’ve ever seen!” joked a third commenter and a fourth agreed, “[It’s] like a scripted fight in a movie.”

While cats and dogs are often considered archenemies, videos like this prove that they can get along. According to Catster, a North American monthly magazine, barking, chasing, and wrestling are typical signs of play.

As seen in the video, the pets appear relaxed, showing no signs of aggression. If their fur were standing up or their ears were back, it would indicate that playtime is over.

It’s clear that the pets have a mutual understanding and are both enjoying themselves as they participate together. However, if a dog starts to growl or a cat begins to hiss, they should be separated immediately.

The American Kennel Club says that some breed groups are more likely to get along with cats than others. Breeds in the Toy Group like Sunny, are known for being affectionate and sociable, and those in the Sporting Group, which are friendly and outgoing, tend to get along well with cats.

However, Terriers, bred for hunting, and Sighthounds, which are hardwired for chasing, may have instincts that could make coexisting with cats challenging. Herding breeds, which have a tendency to herd anything that moves, might also annoy cats.

These are generalizations, and with proper socialization, training, and introductions, most dogs can live peacefully with cats.

It’s important to consider the individual personalities of both the dog and the cat and to ensure the cat has a way to escape if needed. Owners are advised to always supervise interactions until you’re confident they can coexist peacefully, and consult with breeders about a breed’s suitability for a multi-pet household.

The AKC states the following dogs make ‘pur-fect’ companions:-

  • Beagles
  • Golden Retrievers
  • Pugs
  • Bulldogs
  • Basset Hounds

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
