POST FALLS – A Deputy with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office fired his service weapon after being attacked by two aggressive dogs while delivering court paperwork on September 18, 2024, in Post Falls.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:00 AM when the Deputy arrived at a residence on Monarch Avenue to serve the documents. Aware of two aggressive pit bulls at the home from previous interactions, the Deputy backed away after knocking on the door in an attempt to avoid a confrontation. However, when the homeowner opened the door, the two dogs charged at him aggressively.
One of the dogs bit the Deputy on his leg, prompting the officer to discharge his weapon in self-defense. The second dog then also attacked, forcing the Deputy to fire his weapon again. Both dogs were struck by gunfire and later died from their injuries.
The Deputy was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries sustained from the dog bite. According to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, no criminal charges have been filed against the homeowner following the incident.
An independent investigation into the shooting is being conducted by the Post Falls Police Department, in addition to a separate investigation by the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office. Further details will be released as the investigations progress.
