OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA (KOKH) — The Oklahoma Humane Society received seven dogs displaced byHurricane Francine on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
The pups were brought to Oklahoma following a request from the Terrebonne Parish Animal Shelter in Gray, LA to evacuate all unhoused animals.
With help from the ASPCA on the ground, the dogs were transferred and will be available for adoption in a few weeks.
“During disasters like Hurricane Francine, collaborative efforts with local animal welfare agencies are crucial in ensuring the safety of shelter animals and facilitating their relocation to areas where they can find loving homes,” said Katherine Good, Senior Manager of Animal Placement Partnerships for ASPCA Shelter Services. “This partnership not only safeguards the well-being of these animals but also optimizes resources to aid other animals in need, reflecting our collective commitment to animal rescue and welfare in times of crisis.”
The Terrebonne Parish Animal Shelter was directly hit by the storm and required assistance with animal care.
“The Oklahoma Humane Society’s vision is to ensure the compassion and respectful treatment of animals. While we focus almost exclusively on Oklahoma City and the surrounding area, we also want to be a leader nationally and show the rest of the country that we care about animals that are displaced due to no fault of their own,”said Oklahoma Humane Society CEO, Mark Eby. “I’m happy we have been able to assist with a portion of the animals impacted by Hurricane Francine. I know Oklahoma residents will open their homes to help them find a new life here.”
