Responsible Dog Ownership Month: 11 ways to keep your dog safe, healthy, and happy

September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month, and while we continue to love and appreciate the joys dogs bring to our lives, dog ownership is a lifelong commitment that requires time, attention, and effort to keep our dogs healthy and happy.

Regular vet checkups, grooming, and a nutritious diet are just a few ways to care for our dogs. Whether you are a new dog owner or a long-term canine enthusiast, here are 11 ways to celebrate Responsible Dog Ownership Month and show appreciation for the creatures who love us unconditionally!

  1. Get your dog spayed or neutered: In many states, getting your dog spayed or neutered is a legal requirement. Sterilization helps prevent overpopulation and reduces the risk of diseases and illnesses such as testicular and uterine cancer. “Fixing” your dog also eliminates heat cycles, improves behavior, reduces the risk of roaming, and makes dogs less aggressive and moody. While dogs can be spayed or neutered at any age, it is recommended to do so between 6 and 18 months, depending on their breed and size.
  2. Keep microchips updated: Microchip technology is the best way to find your pet if they go missing. While microchipping is typically a one-time procedure, it’s important to update your vet whenever you change addresses or phone numbers.
  3. Groom regularly: Regular grooming is a must to keep your dog looking, smelling, and feeling their best, especially for longer-haired dogs. Dogs should visit the groomer every couple of months, in addition to regular at-home baths and brushing. A clean, appropriately trimmed coat prevents fleas, bacteria buildup, overheating, and other issues, allowing your pet to frolic comfortably without irritation.
  4. Exercise your dog every day: Aim for walks at least twice a day, and provide plenty of playtime and toys to keep your dog healthy by burning calories and staying fit. Lack of exercise can lead to boredom and destructive behavior, as well as diabetes and obesity.
  5. Socialize your dog: Dogs are pack animals, and whether your dog is part of a big or small family, regular introductions to other animals and humans help them become more trusting and less anxious, which can reduce the risk of dog bites and attacks. From puppy playdates to dog shows, exposure to the world around them keeps their tails wagging and their mouths free of growls!
  6. Feed your dog a healthy diet: Research the best dog food brands based on your dog’s age, size, and health needs, and avoid unhealthy and toxic foods such as wet food, chocolate, raw meat, and nationally recalled brands. If you’re looking to switch up your dog’s meals, try offering healthy human foods like chicken, pork, tuna, or watermelon—just make sure they remain unseasoned.
  7. Visit the vet regularly: Dogs need annual checkups, as well as additional vet visits if any unusual symptoms or behaviors occur. Responsible pet owners should also research and learn more about their dog’s breed and its characteristics, and always come prepared with questions or concerns when visiting the doggy doctor.
  8. Keep up to date with dental care: Dental care is often neglected in dogs, so be sure to brush your dog’s teeth at least 2-3 times a week. Adequate brushing, along with doggy dental treats, prevents tooth decay, bad breath, oral pain, and more. Professional dental cleanings at least once a year are also recommended.
  9. Teach your dog some new tricks: Ongoing training and learning new tricks keep your dog active and mentally stimulated. Try an agility course, practice swimming, or even review basics like “sit” and “fetch.” Dogs are naturally intelligent and thrive when exercising both their bodies and brains.
  10. Give your dog lots of snuggles: Dogs are called “man’s best friend” for a reason, and what makes them happiest is constant cuddles and love from their owners!
  11. Adopt, don’t shop: Lastly, for all future dog owners, being a responsible owner means avoiding puppy mills and backyard breeders, who not only run the risk of selling sickly and abused dogs but also contribute to the overcrowding of animal shelters across the country. Find your forever companion ethically by adopting a dog from your local rescue.
