TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – As of Friday, there are 27 adoptable dogs in need of homes at the Smith County Animal Shelter. Shelter operators say the facility is over capacity and that these dogs face a potential life or death situation.
“The very last resort we are trying to stay away from is euthanasia for any of the ones that are available because the majority of them are very highly adoptable,” said Shelter Supervisor Amber Greene. “They just need to know that they’re loved.”
The urgent need for more room comes as the shelter seized and gained custody of 59 dogs from what authorities said is an animal cruelty case and alleged dogfighting ring. The rescued dogs cannot be adopted just yet.
The shelter waived adoption fees for the month, but Greene assured that does not mean they take the owner vetting process any less seriously.
“The vetting process still goes through the same,” she said. “They’ve got to fill out the application. Just because we need the dogs out of here doesn’t mean we’re just going to let them go to anybody.”
They have dogs of different ages and sizes in need of adoption. To see all 27 dogs available and read details about them, click here.
”Every dog, in my opinion, deserves a loving home. They’re living, breathing creatures, too, and of course they have feelings,” said Greene.
