ANSONIA, CT (WFSB) – Two men face a list of animal cruelty related charges after police in Ansonia executed a search warrant at a home.
Javon Coverson, 30, and Assante Coverson, 26, were both arrested.
One dog was dead, two had to be euthanized, and 11 others were seized. Three cats were also seized.
Police they executed the warrant on June 6 at an address on Condon Drive for an unrelated criminal investigation when they found emaciated dogs that needed immediate medical attention.
A necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of death for the dog that was found dead.
“Several dogs were transported to an emergency animal clinic for immediate medical care,” Ansonia police said. “Despite efforts to save them, two dogs had to be humanely euthanized due to their extreme medical conditions, as determined by the attending veterinarian. Several other dogs are still receiving treatment.”
The arrival of the dogs at the Ansonia Animal Shelter put the shelter into quarantine for the Parvo virus.
“Please do not come to the shelter until further notice,” the city posted to social media.
Javon Coverson was charged with eight counts cruelty to animals, seven counts of failure to comply with dog ownership requirements, and seven counts of failure to comply with rabies control ordinances.
He posted a $10,000 bond and was given a court date of June 20 in Derby Superior Court.
Assante Coverson was charged with cruelty to animals, failure to comply with dog ownership requirements, failure to comply with rabies control ordinances.
He posted a $1,000 bond and was given a court date of June 14, 2024 in Derby Superior Court.
Police said the investigation into the case was ongoing, and other arrests may be made as further evidence is gathered.
