Dog putting eating “on pause” for sweetest reason melts hearts

A video of a dog chomping on his food has delighted over 756,000 TikTok viewers in less than 24 hours. But the clip hasn’t become a viral sensation because the canine is enjoying his food. Instead, it is what happens mid-meal that has warmed the internet’s heart.

Rolls Royce, an American “pocket” bully, appears to be a polite dog, as he simply cannot finish his meal without greeting his owner first. The text layered over the clip explains, “Rolls doesn’t play about his food, but if he loves you, he will put it on pause.”

At the time of writing, the adorable footage shared by @223.kennels has received over 150,000 likes. He can be seen excitedly wagging his tail and rubbing his body up his owner’s legs.

This wholesome interaction may make you wonder if dogs like their owners more than food. It turns out some dogs do, according to a study published in the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience.

In 2016, a group of researchers at the Department of Psychology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, scanned the brains of 15 dogs to see how they responded to signals for food, praise, or nothing.

Most dogs’ brains reacted strongly to both food and praise, often preferring praise. In a follow-up test, when praise was sometimes withheld, the dogs’ brain responses confirmed that they valued praise.

Finally, dogs chose between food and their owner in a maze. The brain scan results predicted their choices, showing that some dogs find social interaction more rewarding than food. This helps explain why social rewards are effective in dog training.

Judging by the comments, Rolls Royce isn’t the only canine who shows love to his owner during meal times.

“My dog always makes sure I see her appreciating her food before she eats. She’ll wag, eye contact, nudge her bowl, eye contact, then more wagging before she eats a morsel,” one commenter wrote.

Another person said, “My dogs used to always come to me for cuddles after eating their food.”

A third commenter said: “Our bully does this and it makes me so happy and grateful.”

While it may be tempting to give your dog extra food in exchange for more love, owners should avoid overfeeding and sharing certain human foods with their dogs.

Newsweek previously spoke to veterinarian Dr. Pete Wedderburn about the ways owners can help their dogs live long, and a good diet was top of the list.
