“I’m going to save their lives:” Local shelter takes in 7 of 11 dogs facing euthanasia

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Homeward Animal Shelter is still looking for help after they took in 7 of 11 dogs that were all facing euthanasia following being rescued from the Spirit Lake Reservation.

Earlier this week, the shelter posted on social media saying they recently recieved a desparate plea for help from Journey Home Animal Rescue in rescuing 13 dogs from the tribal pound.

Homeward originally took two of the dogs, leaving 11, who faced euthanasia if not properly cared for by July 29. As of today, July 25, Homeward now has seven, and other rescues across the state have the remaining dogs.

Heather Clyde, Homeward’s Operations Director, and everyone at the shelter believes every dog deserves a loving home, but with more animals in need than space available, these local shelters are often put in tough situations.

“There’s just not enough people adopting, and a lot of people are surrending their animals, everyone is just feeling the pinch right now. We’re just doing what we can to help out the animals in our area and save their lives,” Clyde said.

She added, “When I first got that message about the dogs, my heart dropped because we only have nine dog kennels at our shelter.”

With an operation this big, they knew it was an all hands on deck type of situation.

“We were like… ‘What do we do?’ I finally said, ‘I’m going to put out a hail mary post on Facebook and see what happens!’” said Clyde.

What happened – is the reason why these dogs are still alive today. Homeward received several applications from people who are looking to either foster or adopt the reservation dogs.

As she reflects on the community’s support, Heather said, “We put the word out that we needed help, and our community responded, just like they do every single time. This isn’t the first time, and it’s huge because it’s literally life-saving.”

With the community’s help, these dogs are safe, cared for, and ready to find their forever homes.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
