LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – It’s a scene you wouldn’t expect in a residential neighborhood. A pack of dogs on the loose.
“We’re greatly concerned that someone, a child or another animal or something’s gonna get hurt, going to get bit,” Valley Station resident Bill Williams said.
Williams says his next door neighbor’s pups have become a problem in his neighborhood, and some residents are at the end of their leash.
“Approximately 20 dogs in the fenced in yard behind me is just, it’s just way too many,” Williams said. “The noise, the smell, it’s just too much.”
LMAS has been in the neighborhood multiple times after the dogs have gotten loose.
The issue has become a concern for a number of neighbors including Anne Dever.
“There’s people in this neighborhood who walk all the time with their children,” Dever said. “It’s just a safety concern. It’s a health concern… We’re just out to help this.”
It’s also a violation of local law.
Councilman Khalil Batshon explains Louisville’s animal ordinances allow “No more than three dogs, excluding puppies.”
“Puppies,” according to the law, are dogs younger than four months of age.
Gary Walker owns the dogs and says the situation simply got out of control.
He says he’s working with the city and trying to fix the problem.
“I’m doing the best I can with it,” Walker said. “I talked to these neighbors and said ‘If you know anybody that wants a dog, let me know.’”
Between physical flyers and posts on Facebook, Walker wants to find these dogs new homes.
“We’ve gotten the word out there. I’ve got flyers at multiple stores, at work I’ve got flyers up, posted on our virtual digital bulletin board.”
Unfortunately LMAS can’t take them in.
Councilman Batshon says they’re full.
“They can’t take 22 more dogs,” he said. “They’re trying to do the best they can.”
Community members say they’ve already helped connect Walker to get some of the dogs spayed and neutered – and will continue to offer support to keep the dogs off the street.
“If, as a neighborhood, if we can help or as an organization, if LMAS, or whomever can help, he needs some help,” Williams said.
