There’s an amazing new program in Minnesota that allows people to come take shelter dogs out on little ‘field trips’ for the day. I think this is such a good idea and I hope it’s something that gets expanded to other shelters!

Benefits of These Doggy Field Trips
Tons of benefits come from this idea. The biggest thing is that it gets the dogs out of their kennels and out of the chaos of the shelter for the day and go have some fun.
Another benefit is that if someone is considering adopting a particular dog, you can use this as a way to get to know the dog a little better. Animals don’t usually act 100% like themselves in shelter situations, so getting them out and about is a great idea.
Minneapolis Animal Care and Control Fido Field Trip Program
This particular program is for the dogs at Minneapolis Animal Care and Control. They’re hoping that this program reduces the dogs’ stress of being in a shelter and also improves dogs’ chances of being adopted, according to FOX 9.
In order to be able to take a dog on a field trip there are a few hurdles to jump through first. You need to be at least 18 years old, be able to provide a valid ID, and you have to fill out an application.
If you’re accepted, you’ll get a short training video to watch. You also must agree to keep the dog on a leash at all times when you’re outside and the dog must be picked up and dropped off during shelter hours.
Other than that, just have a good time with your furry friend for the day! It’s a great way to volunteer if you aren’t able to foster. It’s also a great way to get your dose of fur in your life if you don’t have a pet at home.
