You now have to walk your dog on a leash in this Central Florida city

MOUNT DORA, Fla. – The Mount Dora City Council brought its rules on animals in line with Lake County Code, meaning all “at-large animals” must now be leashed when they’re not otherwise securely confined.

Councilmembers took up Ordinance 2024-15 at Thursday night’s meeting, called in part “due to recent resident complaints and response from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office” concerning “nuisance animals,” according to a memorandum.

The ordinance allows police and Lake County Sheriff’s Office personnel alike to enforce sections 4-3 and 4-27 of the Lake County Code within Mount Dora, which respectively provide definitions, as well as authorities and penalties, regarding unleashed pets.

The recommended penalty for a violation of this section is a fine of one hundred and fifty dollars ($150.00) for the first offense and five hundred dollars ($500.00) for any repeat violation within five (5) years of a previous offense.

On social media, the city said the ordinance was effective immediately and affects all Mount Dora pet owners, even those letting their pets explore a yard if the property does not have a secured fence.

According to the Business Impact Estimate for Ordinance 2024-15, the city council believes its adoption of the ordinance will have no direct economic impact to any businesses within Mount Dora’s jurisdiction.
