A dog’s death over the July 4 holiday isn’t linked to swimming in Lake Tahoe, according to the two government agencies that tested the water.
The tests were done at Nevada Beach on Tahoe’s east shore and El Dorado beach in South Lake by the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection and the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Board.
The water samples were taken on July 8 and 10 after a woman blamed toxic algae for killing her dog in a social media post that went viral. She said in her tearful TikTok video that she was told by an emergency vet that the dog died from blue algae.
The Reno Gazette Journal was not able to reach the dog’s owner.
According to a statement released Tuesday, there were no toxins associated with algae blooms at either beach. Water samples taken from a pond near Nevada Beach but not connected to the lake contained a very low level of a harmful algae.
The release said the pond is fenced off and additional fencing is being recommended to prevent dogs from accessing the area.
The agencies have dropped advisories that were set up as a precaution ahead of the findings.
