Tears as abused rescue dog finally learns humans can be “gentle”

After a life of abuse in Romania, one dog almost didn’t believe humans could be gentle. But thanks to one interaction, her whole life is about to change.

Scarlett was saved by rescue organization Angels 4 Dogs, known on TikTok as @angels4dogsrescue. The rescue group focuses on saving and rehoming stray and unwanted dogs in the United Kingdom and Romania. Originally from Romania, Scarlett’s life was filled with abuse that caused her to believe humans were harmful.

But thanks to Angels 4 Dogs stepping in and saving her, Scarlett is turning over a new leaf. In a July 7 TikTok video, Scarlett plays with a boy and a soccer ball. She wasn’t quite sure what to think of the human, but taking a leap of faith she let him touch her. It was at that moment she realized a human’s touch can be “gentle.”

The caption reads: “One more because we are just over the moon at how well she has done.”

Scarlett was hesitant at first but after the boy’s calm and genuine touch, she was ready for more. Forget about playing, she wanted more loving. Her tail wagged excitedly after knowing she was finally safe.

The street dog population in Romania is an issue that escalated in the 1970s when country-wide urbanization had families moving into small apartments and abandoning their dogs, Newsweek previously reported. Estimates suggest there are more than 500,000 homeless dogs in Romania.

To help with the homeless dog crisis, rescues like Angels 4 Dogs step in to save the canines and connect them to fosters and forever homes, which is how Scarlett received her second chance at life.

The organization told Newsweek via TikTok that Scarlett is new and not up for adoption yet. Dogs need time to adjust to their new lives and might be considered a “flight risk.” For now, she’s adapting to her new lifestyle and enjoying time in a home surrounded by love.

They said Scarlett is adjusting fine as she soaks up her time sun bathing any chance she can get.

TikToker Reactions

The beautiful interaction amassed more than 2.8 million views, 187,400 likes and 351 comments as of Monday.

“The fact that dogs can literally be traumatized by people and still give people a chance. They’re better than me for sure,” said a viewer, while a second wrote: “You can tell she really wants the love and affection but is building up the trust.”

While viewers were celebrating this dog’s milestone of learning humans can be good, other TikTok users also pointed out the boy’s gentleness.

“The way the boy is gentle and doesn’t push boundaries I’m sobbing this is such a sweet interaction,” said a TikToker.

Another shared: “He did so well to read the signs.”
