There’s nothing like a Zach Bryan Twitter (now X) Q+A session.
Last night on the social media platform, Zach Bryan was having an active night. This time, he was not going on a rant but interacting with fans’ questions about what inspired some of the tracks on The Great American Bar Scene, his favorite song off the record, and general commentary from his fan base. One response that stuck out to me was ZB going into a bit of detail about what inspired the song “28.”
When he first teased the piano ballad on YouTube, I instantly dove into the lyrics, dissecting them. Zach Bryan released the song right before his 28th birthday this year, and with lines referencing the city of Boston and the streets of New York, I felt as though Zach’ girlfriend, Brianna, was a heavy influence on the song.
“You took a train to the south side of Boston,
You showed me where your old man stayed,
Took 28 years of blood I was lost in,
To feel loved on my own birthday,
I always felt like I’s in between something,
Like home and somewhere far away,
But tonight on the west side in a bar out in Brooklyn,
I saw tears outline your face…”
While the lyrics may still hold some meaning for his girlfriend, Zach took to social media to note that his yellow lab, Boston, was the one who truly inspired the track. He shares that he and Brianna had a scary moment sending their new puppy into emergency surgery, unsure of the outcome. While everything worked out in their favor, it made Zach reflect on how blessed he is to have the life he does with the people and dogs he loves most.
“Boston, our puppy was going into surgery, and I told Brianna, “How lucky are we?” to have -had- a puppy so beautiful, and she came out of it just fine; I wrote it the next day because I felt like the luckiest man on the planet.”
Any pet owner knows how scary it is to have a medical emergency and hoping your four-legged best friend has no complications. We knew Zach Bryan was a man of the people, but oh my goodness, that tugs at the heartstrings, knowing that his sweet dog inspired the song. Talk about dog dad of the year.
The lyrics represent the things that Zach is thankful for, and that moment of reflecting on what could have been the loss of their puppy created a beautiful song highlighting that even in the dark moments, there is always light.
