During this time, your pet can easily get caught up in the excitement of outdoor adventures.

Apart from the various inconvenience, an unclean pet can pose serious health risks. According to Dr Deepak Saraswat, Head veterinarian, Zigly, “Uncleanliness in pets can lead to a range of issues, from skin infections aggravated by moisture to persistent odors that signal underlying health concerns. Also, excessive moisture trapped in fur can create a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, potentially leading to skin infections such as dermatitis.” Moreover, the damp environment during monsoon can exacerbate existing skin conditions like allergies, causing discomfort and itching.

Additionally, that lingering wet-dog smell can indicate underlying health issues such as bacterial overgrowth or yeast infections. “Regular grooming not only keeps your pet smelling fresh but also helps you detect early signs of health problems before they escalate,” he adds.

Dr Saraswat shares essential grooming tips to help you maintain your pet’s cleanliness, comfort, and health during the rainy days:

Brush the coat regularly: Start your pet’s day with a thorough brushing. This removes dirt and loose hair, preventing matting and tangles that can lead to skin irritation or allergies.

Choose the right brush for your pet’s coat type: slicker brushes work well for long hair, while bristle brushes suit short coats. Be gentle and consider using a detangling spray for easier grooming.

Dry them thoroughly: After bathing, dry your pet thoroughly to prevent moisture buildup, which can lead to fungal or bacterial growth. Use a clean towel to remove excess water, and for pets with thick fur, consider using a blow dryer on a low heat setting. Keep the dryer moving to avoid overheating or burning their skin.

Trim that nail: Regularly trim your pet’s nails to prevent discomfort and walking issues. Use pet nail clippers appropriate for their size, or seek professional help if you’re unsure. Maintaining proper nail length is essential for your pet’s comfort and health.

Dental care is important: Don’t overlook your pet’s oral health. Regular brushing with pet-specific toothpaste helps prevent plaque buildup, gum disease, and tooth loss. Dental chews and toys can also aid in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Schedule regular veterinary check-ups to monitor their oral health and address any concerns promptly.

Prevent them from flea and tick: Use veterinarian-recommended flea and tick medications regularly, especially if your pet spends time outdoors. Check their coat frequently, particularly after walks in grassy or wooded areas, and promptly remove any ticks using a proper removal tool. Wash your pet’s bedding regularly and vacuum your home to help control these pests effectively.

It is important to introduce grooming practices gradually, and ensuring a positive experience with treats and praise. If you notice persistent skin issues or your pet shows signs of distress during grooming, consult your vet for medical advice.
