We all know dogs can be quite dramatic. They sulk when you leave the house, give side-eye when you move their bed, and act personally betrayed when dinner is five minutes late. But nothing quite captures that flair for the theatrical like the moment they realize their favorite human is walking out the door and they’re stuck with the “backup.” That very situation played out in one Instagram video where a dad becomes the reluctant “spare human” to a group of hilariously disapproving dogs.

The Instagram video opens with the caption: “Leaving the kids with the spare human.” It shows five dogs lined up near the front door of their home. All of them wear identical expressions of sadness and mild betrayal. Their mom is filming the scene as she prepares to leave. Standing beside is the dad, jokingly referred to as the “spare human”, who seems just as much a part of the scene as the dogs, though clearly less appreciated by them in that moment.

The dogs stare at their mom with mournful expressions, as if fully understanding that their preferred person is walking out. Trying to reassure her pack, the woman speaks to them in a comforting but cheeky tone. “I know you’re stuck with him and what a disappointment that is,” she jokes, before adding, “but I’ll be back.” She then turns the camera to the stairs, revealing two more dogs watching from above, also looking unamused. The entire scene unfolds like a family comedy. The dogs act like disapproving toddlers left with the wrong babysitter.

It didn’t take long for the video to spark reactions across Instagram. One person wrote, “They’re all standing there like ‘why hast thou forsaken us?’” Another asked, “HOW DO YOU LIVE IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN!? A blessing-full of dogs!” referring to the seemingly perfect dog-filled household.

The humor didn’t stop there. “This is literally me every time I leave my house! The sad puppy dog eyes get me every time,” one user shared. Another pointed out the dad’s reaction, “The husband has no objection to her comment… he’s standing there like ‘guys, what are we gonna do now?’”
