SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Animal Care Services (ACS) is hosting a class aimed at helping new pet parents manage possessive behaviors in their dogs. The program is designed for pets parents with the goal of empowering them and preventing behavioral issues from escalating.
During the evening class, ACS dog trainers will discuss possessive behaviors and how to address them at home. Participants will learn to identify common signs of guarding, understand why dogs develop these behaviors, and explore positive training techniques to reduce guarding.
Also as San Antonio continues to see more dog intakes or dogs being abandoned, ACS trainers want to keep dogs in their homes.
“If we’re able to walk them through those challenges and show them through simple management and training that we are able to grow past this, be a more polite, well mannered dog, and therefore stay in our adoption home or find a new adoption home if we’re in foster that’s what we want to do.” said ACS trainer Jordan Tietz. The trainers aim to empower pet owners to train their dogs effectively, making the process easier.
Tietz emphasized the importance of training older dogs as well. Older dogs can learn new behaviors, it is just about finding what motivates them and communicating effectively.
Today’s session runs from 6 to 7 p.m. at the ACS shelter off Highway 151. The session is for people only, so attendees are advised to leave their pets at home but will learn techniques to teach them new tricks.
You can sign up for this class and future ones by emailing ACStrainer@sanantonio.gov.
