Suspect who shot at Slidell police found in abandoned car after search using dogs and a drone

A suspect in a domestic violence case who shot at Slidell police officers responding to a 911 call was later caught and arrested after a search using dogs and a drone, police said.

The Slidell Police Department said in a news release Monday afternoon that the suspect fired at least two shots. The officers were not hit and did not return fire, the department said in the news release.

The suspect, Corey Griffin, 39, was in custody, police said.

“This was an exceptional demonstration of teamwork, precision and courage,” Slidell Police Chief Randy Fandal said. “I’m proud of every member involved and thankful that no one was injured in what could have been a tragic situation.”

Officers responded to a 911 hangup call from a residence in the 3600 block of Riviera Drive just after midnight, police said. When they arrived, officers saw a domestic disturbance involving a man and woman in the driveway of the home.

Officers tried to speak with the woman, but Griffin pulled a firearm and fired at them, police said. Griffin fled back into the house and officers discovered there was also a young child inside.

Officers secured the outside of the home and a SWAT team was called in. SWAT members went inside the home, found the child asleep and brought the child back outside, police said.

They determined that Griffin had fled the house through the backyard.

Officers launched a drone to search by air and officers with police dogs tracked Griffin through some nearby woods. He was later found hiding in the backseat of an abandoned vehicle and was taken in without incident, police said.

Louisiana State Police and the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search, police said.

Griffin was being held Monday at the Slidell City Jail on a count of domestic abuse aggravated assault. Additional charges of attempted first-degree murder are pending, police said.
