(SCHENECTADY, NY) — When we think of pet therapy programs in a healthcare setting, it’s usually a benefit designed for patients – not staff. Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital is changing that.
A successful therapy program for patients to spend time with dogs has now been extended to it’s hospital care team. Staff is able to visit with canines during their lunch breaks at specific times of the month when handlers are on site.
“I think it’s great. It helps relieve some stress throughout the day.” Says Nicole Calkins, an Occupational Therapist. “I think it helps to recharge for the next half of the day.”
Lead Recreational Therapist, Lexi Kane, says spending even an hour with the dogs is beneficial for staff on multiple levels.
“It’s so good for our health. Mentally, emotionally, physically, socially, cognitively…” She says. “This is our third month of doing it and I think already seeing the smiles on everybody’s faces told us we’re doing the right thing.”
The canines, of all shapes and sizes, are registered through Rock Dog. It’s a therapy dog program out of Rochester. Just like their handlers, the dogs are technically considered volunteers at Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital. This means, like their human counterparts, they must pass an annual health screening and wear a badge on the property.
“It’s so important for employers to do these kinds of things for employees because it really shows how much they care about their health.” Kane says.
