Kernersville man charged with animal cruelty, dogs reportedly found in locked car

On Saturday, Forsyth County Sheriff’s deputies were alerted to multiple dogs in danger inside a locked vehicle.

After deputies arrived at the scene, near East 2nd and North Church Streets, they saw three dogs in the car.

Deputies immediately determined the dogs to be in discomfort, and broke a window.

Winston-Salem Fire Department officials were also at the scene, but tragically two of the dogs died.

First responders say that the third dog was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic and is expected to make a full recovery.

Authorities say investigation unveiled that the dogs were left inside the vehicle overnight with the windows rolled up.

The suspect who owned the car, Darin Latrelle James, reported that he did check on the dogs earlier in the day and they seemed fine.

James, 23, from Kernersville, now faces three counts of Misdemeanor Animal Cruelty.

He was given a $10,000 unsecured bond and a first court date of July 1 in the Forsyth County Courthouse.

Authorities say this investigation remains ongoing, and will share more details when available.
