WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A man is facing charges after two dogs died and a third was hospitalized after being left inside a locked car in Winston-Salem on Saturday, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said they were approached near East 2nd Street and North Church Street on Saturday by someone who reported seeing dogs in distress inside a vehicle. When deputies arrived, they found three dogs showing signs of heat distress. Authorities broke a window to rescue them.
Winston-Salem firefighters arrived shortly after and tried to revive the dogs. Despite their efforts, two of the animals died at the scene. The third was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic and is expected to recover.
Investigators said the dogs had been left in the car overnight with the windows rolled up. The vehicle’s owner, identified as 23-year-old Darin Latrelle James of Kernersville, told deputies he had checked on the dogs earlier that morning and believed they were fine.
James is charged with three counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty. He was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond and is scheduled to appear in court on July 1.
“As pet owners, we must be responsible to ensure the safety and care of our pets. This is a sad incident, I hope it brings awareness that the summer days are upon us, and we must always be mindful— we are their voice, their protection, and all our pets and animals are a part of this community,” Sheriff Bobby F. Kimbrough, Jr. said.
Deputies said the investigation is still ongoing.
