The other day, a staff member at Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter in Texas entered the kennel room to find a shelter dog named Judy wandering around. None of the kennel doors were open, and all had walls about 6 feet high. Surely, Judy hadn’t scaled a kennel door to escape?
She certainly had.

Footage of the kennel room revealed that Judy climbed up and over the 6-foot metal door, briefly balanced on the narrow doorframe like a tightrope walker, and hopped to the ground.
“There’s crossbars,” April Peiffer, the shelter’s Community Engagement Coordinator, told The Dodo, still somewhat in disbelief. “She could get footing in order to be able to climb.”
This isn’t the first time that Judy, a smart and energetic dog who arrived at Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter in early May, has plotted an escape. It’s just the first time it worked.

Another time, Judy roamed the play yard while the staff cleaned. “She did her very best to get out of there, too,” Peiffer said. “So we know that she just is all about going on her own walkabouts.”
Judy is called the shelter’s “jailbreak queen.” Peiffer said she weighs 57 pounds, is about 2 years old and has two different eye colors. When she arrived at Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter as a lost dog, which is the term staff uses for strays, she was in good condition, though she tested positive for heartworm and was “not happy about having been contained.”

To keep Judy safe after her journey over the kennel door, staff moved her to a different kennel with a cover so she couldn’t break out. But she wouldn’t stay put for long.
On June 3, Judy was adopted. “We’re very happy that her jailbreak has been made into a permanent one,” Peiffer said. Judy now lives with her forever family who will give her plenty of space to roam.
