Six dogs in Polk County were found inside a 107-degree home that lacked power and was covered in trash, feces and urine, deputies said.
Alan Alderman, 29, and Thornton Arnold, 65, were arrested Friday on six counts each of animal neglect and taken to the Polk County Jail, according to a Monday news release from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. They told deputies two of the dogs were theirs, three belonged to Alderman’s girlfriend who is currently in jail and that they were unaware the sixth dog existed.
The dogs were taken to Polk County Animal Control for medical evaluation and treatment.
“We don’t tolerate animal abuse in Polk County,” Polk Sheriff Grady Judd said in the release. “These dogs suffered due to pure neglect and now, their abusers are right where they belong.”

Deputies first arrived at the home and were able to see and hear the dogs inside, and could smell the trash, feces and urine from outside. The home had no power and the windows weren’t open, the release said.
Once deputies were inside, they found the dogs were visibly panting and did not have access to food or drinkable water, according to the release. Their body temperatures reached as high as 105 degrees.

The deputies had to climb over items and feces in one bedroom where trash was stacked to the ceiling. The temperature inside was measured to be 107 degrees, and the home’s ammonia levels were measured at a “hazardous” 25 ppm compared to the standard 0 ppm for clean air, the release said.
