Anchorage Animal Care and Control urgently seeking adoptive and foster homes

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Anchorage Animal Care and Control is urgently seeking adoptive pet parents and foster homes for cats and dogs in their care.

Following a seizure of 71 dogs and two birds from an Anchorage home on Thursday, AACC vocalized an urgent need for adoptions. Their shelter, built to house 60-65 dogs maximum, is now significantly over capacity.

Friday a spokesperson reported with the addition of rescued animals from a home they described as an animal “hoarding house,” their headcount of dogs in their care was up to 123.

Joel Jorgensen, community outreach manager for AACC, said their social media posts calling for assistance in making room at the shelter were well-received by the Anchorage community.

By the end of day Friday Jorgensen said 17 animals were adopted, freeing up 17 spaces with the proper amount of space AACC is working to provide all of the animals in their care.

“On Thursday we took in 71, which more than doubles our entire population and makes every animal in here go down to a single kennel. It makes it very tight,” Jorgensen said. “Getting 17 dogs [adopted] out, that’s 17 dogs that now can go back to their proper amount of space they’re supposed to have…They can go back to living their happy proper life and the expected space they should have.”

At time of publication Jorgensen did not have the official count of adoptions from Saturday, but the line inside the shelter stretched through most of the building. Jorgensen estimated 25 animals would have found a new home by the end of the day.

“We’re still open tomorrow, on Sunday. Come adopt. I know we’ll be closed on Monday for Memorial Day, but there’s still plenty of time to find that forever friend.”
