Sacramento author pens new children’s book encouraging animal adoption

Animal shelters across Northern California are full of dogs and cats in need of adoption.For a Sacramento author, she took the desire to help those animals and channeled it into a new children’s book, “A Shelter is…A Dog’s Journey from Shelter to Home.”“My goal of this story is just to really connect the community with their local animal shelters,” said Carolyn Wooddall. “Picture books, I think, are one of the truest, most beautiful forms of books.”The book seeks to inspire kids to care for animals in need of adoption, and to honor the shelters providing them with temporary ones.“A Shelter is…” takes its readers through a dog’s experience coming into a shelter, receiving care and being adopted into a new family.This book comes as there is a desperate need for adoptions and fosters in shelters across the region. At the Sacramento SPCA, there are dozens of dogs in need of families. “I think dogs really do have the appreciation of going from wherever they were before, to the shelter to then being in a home where they know they’ll be loved for the rest of their lives,” said Natalie Vergara, of the Sacramento County SPCA. Any of the animals waiting for adoption right now could be the main character in “A Shelter is…”Wooddall said the human characters were inspired by her and her husband’s own work and personal experience with rescue animals. The couple started a non-profit organization, Hard Luck Animal Welfare Advocates, in 2023, primarily serving animals in Stockton shelters.“It is my love letter to just all the incredible people who work at animal shelters,” Wooddall said. “It’s a dream come true getting to see my book alongside many others in the world,” she said.Elaine S.
