CLOVER, S.C. (WBTV) – A couple was charged Saturday after reports surfaced that their dogs were being severely malnourished in York County.
Records showed that Amari Mitchell, 27, and Kaitlyn Johnson, 26, were jailed and charged with ill-treatment of animals, burying a dead animal improperly, and criminal conspiracy.

According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, Mitchell and Johnson mistreated multiple dogs at their home in Clover.
Animal complaint
An affidavit stated that on Saturday, May 10, an animal control officer went to the couple’s home for an animal complaint.
When that officer arrived, they reportedly found an animal carcass that wasn’t buried near the rear fence gate of the backyard. In South Carolina, state law requires dead animals to be buried at least three feet deep.
Additionally, the officer said that a “very malnourished” dog named Axel was on the property.
After finding Axel, the officer spoke with Mitchell, who said the dog had a vet appointment on Monday, May 12. Records showed he was euthanized during that visit.
According to the vet’s report, Axel’s decline happened over months due to starvation and long-term neglect.
“He suffered a great deal,” the veterinary report read. “Unfortunately, given Axel’s level of emaciation, dehydration, and shock, his prognosis was grave, and he was humanely euthanized to end his suffering.”
Search warrant
Days after the initial complaint, agents executed a search warrant at Mitchell and Johnson’s home on Friday, May 16.
During that search, state law enforcement agents found a small dog locked in a hallway closet labeled “Dog Room.” Inside, there was no lighting, water, and minimal air circulation, with temperatures warmer than 75 degrees.
An affidavit read, “The back side of the door had significant scratch marks indicating that the dog had made significant efforts to escape the room.”
The report continued, stating sandpaper was set up along the interior of the door to prevent the dog from scratching it.
It wasn’t immediately clear what condition the dog was in or if agents took it from the property.
