Passion 4 Pets: Spotlight on K9s For Warriors, 2 lovable dogs looking for homes

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As part of our ongoing Passion 4 Pets event, we continue to highlight local pet shelters and rescue organizations dedicated to giving pets a second chance at life.

On Wednesday at noon, we turned our attention to an extraordinary nonprofit doing remarkable work for both animals and veterans—K9s For Warriors.

K9s For Warriors is the nation’s largest provider of service dogs to military veterans suffering from PTSD. What makes their mission even more inspiring is that the majority of their service dogs come from rescue shelters, offering these animals not just a second chance, but a purpose.

Daniel Clavel from K9s For Warriors spoke with News4JAX, along with two adorable dogs—Kona and Astro—both of whom are looking for their forever homes.

Meet Kona: The Sweetheart with a Gentle Spirit

Kona was part of the service dog training program but was medically disqualified due to poor hip coverage. While this means he can’t serve as a working dog, he still has all the traits of a wonderful family companion. Kona is young, affectionate, and partially trained—making him a great fit for someone willing to continue his development at home.

“Kona just needs a handler to keep up with his training. He’s a fantastic family pet,” said Clavel.

Meet Astro: The Big Dog with a Big Personality

Astro, on the other hand, has a bold and energetic personality. While he completed much of his training, he didn’t qualify for service work due to some behavioral issues. He thrives with structure and consistency, and would do best in a home ready to offer both.

“He’s a big dog with a lot of love to give,” Clavel noted. “And we continue training post-adoption, including in-home support to ensure the transition is successful.”

Young, Trainable, and Ready to Love

Both Kona and Astro are between one and two years old—the ideal age for dogs transitioning from training into home life. Kona has been with K9s For Warriors for a few months, while Astro has been waiting for about six to eight months.

If you’re looking to adopt a loyal, loving companion, now’s your chance. These two pups are ready for a home, and adopting from K9s For Warriors comes with continued training and support to help ensure a smooth journey for both dog and adopter.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
