All pet owners should do key thing to protect their animals, says vet

Most pet owners will feel strongly about the health of their pets, and will do almost anything it takes to keep their furry friends at the best health they can be.

While it’s a known fact that making sure your pet is feeling its best, such as by keeping on top of their vaccinations, feeding them a healthy and nutritious diet, taking them for exercise and to the vets whenever they need, there’s one more consideration that should be added to the mix. It’s important to know what to do if your pet gets into trouble and runs away from home.

Veterinarian Cat has grown a following on social media with hundreds of thousands of followers by sharing her top tips and tricks for pet owners to keep them as healthy as possible to prevent diseases. In one video, she shared one important aspect of pets’ healthcare that owners often forget about.

“I talk a lot on my channel about how to protect our pets from illness and disease, by doing things like feeding them a good diet, making sure they’re regularly vaccinated and covered against parasites,” she said at the start of her video.

“But another really important part of protecting our pets is making sure they’re microchipped. And not just microchipped, but ensuring that your contact details are held on a reputable database,” she added.

While some might argue that it’s an unnecessary expense, Cat argued that it could be the way to make sure you get your pet back if it were to run away. And as National Microchipping Month is coming up (June), it’s a good idea to check if your cat is microchipped.

She went on to share: “So, here’s how it works. Once a microchip is scanned, a number appears on the scanner. And once that number is put into a database, your contact details will appear.”

“Your contact details aren’t held directly on the chip like some people think, and nor is it a GPS tracker. The technology isn’t quite there yet for that,” Cat explained. “So it’s really important that you keep your contact details up to date and put plenty of information in there. So you or a member of your family can always be contacted if your pet get handed in as a stray.”

She went on to recommend that you add in different modes of contact, such as your email, phone number, and address.

“And it’s absolutely vital that the database that you are registered with has 24 hour online access, both for owners and for registered users, like vets, so those details are always accessible should your pet go missing and be found,” Cat said.

“Not only does this keep your pet safe from ending up in the rescue system and never getting home, it’s also a legal requirement,” she shared.”

It’s been mandatory for dogs to be chipped since 2016, and a similar law became official for cats in 2024, making it mandatory for all cats in England to get microchipped.

“So don’t forget to add checking their chip to your pet’s regular preventative care,” Cat urged her viewers.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
