MARK LIVERMAN HAS MORE ON HOW THEY’RE LOOKING TO BRING IN MORE TROOPS. THE NORTH STATE ONE TWO. IDA 423. YES, SIR. NORTH STATE ONE IS APPROXIMATELY TWO MINUTES. ETA IF THE STATE HIGHWAY PATROL’S RECRUITING DOCUMENTARY DOESN’T LURE YOU INTO THE FORCE, HOW ABOUT GETTING PAID FOR TROOPER TRAINING? MORNING? 164 BYTES OF SCHOOL. AND THE PERKS DON’T END THERE. THAT SALARY, ALONG WITH FULL STATE BENEFITS. AND THEY START BUILDING TOWARD THEIR STATE RETIREMENT IMMEDIATELY. ALL OF IT BEING PUT INTO PLAY FOR JUST THE THIRD TIME EVER. THE REASON NGCP IS SEEING SOME OF ITS LOWEST ENROLLMENT RATES EVER. LIEUTENANT JOSH DOWELL, WHOSE TROOP COVERS THE STATE’S 17 MOST WESTERN COUNTIES, SAYS THEY HAVE 31 OPENINGS ALONE. WE’RE JUST NOT REALLY ABLE TO MAKE MUCH GROUND ON THOSE VACANCIES. IT’S ABOUT A SIXTH OF TROOP G’S. TOTAL NUMBER OF POSITIONS HAVING A DIRECT IMPACT ON OUR ROADS. YOU KNOW, PEOPLE THINK THAT THE GUYS ARE OUT THERE FOR JUST FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF PULLING PEOPLE OVER AND RIDING THEM TICKETS. BUT OUR GUYS, YOU KNOW, THE MISSION THAT WE HAVE GIVEN OUR TROOPERS IS TO GO OUT THERE AND TRY TO SAVE LIVES. TROOPERS THAT ARE CRUCIAL NOT JUST TO SAVE LIVES, BUT TO STOP SOMEONE WHO RISKS TAKING SOMEONE ELSE’S TO SERVE AS A DETERRENT. YOU KNOW, SOMEBODY SPEEDING DOWN THE INTERSTATE. THEY SEE THAT TROOPER CAR SITTING THERE ON THE INTERSTATE, AND THEY’LL SLOW DOWN, THE NEED ONLY EXACERBATED BY THE MASSIVE POPULATION BOOM SEEN IN WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA. IT’S KIND OF THE SAME THING ALL ACROSS THE STATE, JUST THE NUMBER OF TROOPERS HAS MAINTAINED THE SAME. BUT, YOU KNOW, MORE AND MORE PEOPLE, MORE AND MORE VEHICLES, MORE AND MORE VISITORS TO THE STATE. AS FOR WHAT’S STOPPING RECRUITS FROM APPLYING, IT MOSTLY COMES DOWN TO TIME AND MONEY. IT’S JUST A HUGE COMMITMENT. AND, YOU KNOW, AND I THINK SOME OF THAT WAS A ROADBLOCK FOR PEOPLE. BUT LIEUTENANT DOWELL IS HOPING THIS PROGRAM WILL HELP LIFT THAT ROADBLOCK. I MEAN, THIS COULD BE A GAME CHANGER FOR SOMEBODY WHO MIGHT NOT HAVE THE MEANS TO BECOME HIGHWAY PATROL. OTHERWISE. CORRECT? CORRECT. AND THAT’S. AND THAT’S WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR, MAN. WE’RE LOOKING FOR PEOPLE WHO WHO REALLY HAVE A HAVE A DESIRE TO DO THIS JOB AND JUST, YOU KNOW, COULDN’T WORK IT OUT OTHERWISE. SO THE TROOPERS CAN FOCUS ON THE MISSION. DANVILLE MENTIONED GETTING OUT THERE AND SAVING LIVES. THAT WAS MARK LIVERMAN REPORTING. NOW NEW THIS MORNING, PART OF A WELL-TRAVELED WINSTON-SALEM ROAD IS CLOSED DUE TO A CRASH. THE EASTBOUND LANES ON NEW WALKERTOWN ROAD AT NORTH JACKSON AVENUE ARE SHUT DOWN AT THIS TIME. POLICE TELL US THE CRASH HAPPENED SHORTLY AFTER 1 A.M. NOW, THERE’S NO WORD ON WHEN THE ROAD WILL REOPEN, BUT DRIVERS ARE ASKED TO FIND AN ALTERNATE ROUTE. IN THE MEANTIME, WHEN WE HAVE MORE INFOR
